Tastes-D-Lites: Tastes Wine Bar

"Do you taste the hints of licorice, black olives and the slight whisper of strawberries that are present in the nose?"

Pow! Right in the kisser.

Looking to enjoy the fruit of the vine minus the wine-snob yammer? Swing over to the Highlands and try out Tastes Wine Bar. Always casual and never pretentious, this little neighborhood bistro offers an impressive menu of over 15 wines by the glass and some 30-odd by the bottle. Can't decide which to try? Let owners Daniel Kuhlman and Kristel Deckx set you up with a Flight of three wines for under $15. For you beer and hard liquor enthusiasts, Tastes also has 26 brews to choose from and long list of scotch, bourbon, tequila and vodka from all over the world.

And if you're inclined to add some solid foods to your liquid diet, you can nosh on some of their inventive tapas and small-plates. Try the hummus and crab cakes or maybe even a bowl of their gourmet stew. The best part, each item on the menu is paired with a carefully selected wine, beer or other appropriate beverage to "enhance" the experience. Translation: you can double or even triple-fist your booze and chalk it up to food and alcohol pairing.

The biggest surprise here at Tastes is the dessert menu. Their selection of sweet treats is nothing short of culinary Crack. With twelve dishes to choose from, the hardest part is figuring out which five to order. Our top pick goes to the either the creme brulee or the almond infused blueberry tart. But, if you're in the mood to really fall off the wagon, then go for the flourless chocolate cake or the Belgian cream puffs topped with dark chocolate and whipped cream. Delicious...and worth every extra grueling mile you'll schlep to burn it off.
