Out on the Town

New + Noteworthy > Bluefin Sushi

They say that when one door closes another one opens.

This cosmic rule couldn't be more true than in Stapleton right now where the recent closing of the Coral Room has scattered droves of style-savvy diners into an eating-out purgatory of sorts. Left to their own devices, diners have been forced to choose between apathetic strip-mall fare and the searing hell of sports bars, where nachos have replaced Ahi and the only notable people-watching is the guy at the bar suckling hot wing sauce off pudgy fingers while transfixed to one of fifteen big-screen TVs.

But alas, there is light at the end of the Cheese Whiz tunnel. Meet Bluefin Sushi, the latest addition to the Stapleton Town Center, and the new home for much of Gaypleton and other Coral Room refugees. The dim and intimate space fits about fifty people, all centered around a blue-lit sushi bar where filets of tuna and puckered Octopus tentacles are stacked delicately behind a glass partition waiting to be sliced, seared and rolled into one of their 40 sashimi/sushi offerings.

The menu includes a pretty standard sushi checklist where prices range from about $4 to $14. The roster has all the usual suspects with a few noteworthy additions including the Shake Kawa roll (salmon skin) and the Baked Spicy Roll (a fat sushi-sausage of cooked salmon and yellowtail tuna). As for the rest of the menu, there's scads of traditional appetizers including mussels, edamame, calamari and even a tempura tofu number that's pretty tasty. For the main course, you'll find seafood and seaweed salads, a variety of pre-selected sushi plates and a few chicken, steak and mackerel entrees for good measure and to, no doubt, appease any non-adventurous culinary types.

Bluefin is one new door that's certain to stay open for quite some time...or at least one can hope.
